The SRD R350 grant was initially introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020 and later extended to 25 March 2025 due to the loss of many people’s jobs and businesses and other financial crises.

SASSA Online Application: Apply for Social Grants

You can apply for social grants through the SASSA online application. There are different types of social grants you can apply for, the one you are eligible for. Before proceeding to the application process, learn the SASSA online registration process.

SASSA Online Account Registration

  • Visit the SASSA official service web portal.
  • Scroll down below and find the “Register” button with a yellow background. You can register a new account there to access the SASSA service.
  • Click the “Register” button to redirect you to the client registration consent. Read the information, check on the Agree button, and then click on the “Apply” button.
  • You will be redirected to the client registration form, which you must fill out in the SASSA online application during registration. 

Here’s how you can fill out the form.

  • Citizenship: (South African citizen/permanent resident/refugee)
  • Identity Document Type: (Identity document/temporary ID)
  • Identity Number: It would be the client’s username. You have to type it twice for confirmation in the two input fields.
  • Choose Title: (Mr/Mrs/Miss)
  • Provide Surname & Full Name: Enter your surname and full name.
  • Email Address: Enter your active email address.
  • Enter Password: Enter a strong password and save it on your phone.
  • Confirm Password: Re-enter the chosen password again.
  • Provide Country Code: If you are a South African citizen, provide a +27 country code.
  • Cell Phone Number: Enter a 10-digit South African number.

When you enter all the above information according to the SASSA online application form, you must click the “Register Me” button.

This was the simple step-by-step procedure for registering yourself with SASSA. Now, wait patiently. You will receive the confirmation SMS/Link via the phone number you provided. When SASSA activates your account, you can apply for social grants.

Apply For Social Grants Through SASSA Online Application

  • After registration, log in to your SASSA account through username and password.
  • Look for the SASSA grant option to view the specific type of grant.
  • Different grants are available, so you can apply for the one you think you are eligible for.
  • You have to complete the form and enter the required information.
  • Print the SASSA-generated affidavit. 
  • Take the bank payment form, sign it, and submit it with the affidavit.
  • Upload the required documents in the PDF format.
  • Provide the required documents according to the grants you wish to apply for. Every grant may require separate information.
  • Double-check the information and click the submit button to apply online for the SASSA grant application.

The SASSA verification and approval process may take time, so wait patiently and check SASSA status after 1-3 months to know whether your application is approved or rejected.

Different Types of Grant Information & Eligibility Criteria

When you apply for the different grants, you must submit the following documents in PDF format and ensure you pass all the points of the eligibility criteria.

Child Support Grant

You must submit the following documents for a child support grant.

  • Applicant ID documents copy
  • Applicant spouse ID document copy (If applicable)
  • Married applicants must submit proof of marital status, e.g., a marriage certificate.
  • Submit proof of the banking details, such as a statement from the bank. You can change banking details as well if required.
  • Proof of income (if applicable)
  • SASSA-generated affidavit

Eligibility Criteria: You must meet the following criteria while applying for the child support grant.

  • The applicant and child must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee.
  • The children must be under 18.
  • The applicant and its space meet the requirements of the SASSA means test.
  • You can’t apply for more than six biological children.

Foster Child Grant

You must submit the following documents for a child support grant.

  • Applicant ID documents copy
  • Applicant spouse ID document copy (If applicable)
  • Marital status proof
  • Banking details proof
  • Proof of income (if applicable)
  • SASSA-generated affidavit

Eligibility Criteria: You must meet the following criteria while applying for the child support grant.

  • The foster parent must be a South African citizen.
  • The applicant and child must reside in South Africa.
  • The child must be in the care of the foster parents during the grant.

 Older Persons Grant

You must submit the following documents for a child support grant.

  • Applicant ID documents copy
  • Applicant spouse ID document copy (If applicable)
  • Marital status proof
  • Banking details proof
  • Proof of income (if applicable)
  • SASSA-generated affidavit

Eligibility Criteria: You must meet the following criteria while applying for the child support grant.

  • Applicant must be a South African citizen and reside there.
  • The applicant must be 60 years or older to get the older person grants.
  • The applicant must not be getting the benefit from any other organization grants.
  • The spouse of the applicant must comply with the means test.
